No specific food or supplement will prevent us for catching a serious infection like COVID-19/Coronavirus.  Good hygiene practice remains the best means of avoiding infection.  However there are plenty of small things we can do that may strengthen our immune system. 

From supplements to exercise to nutrition, we thought we’d share some of the natural ways we’ve been making sure we stay fighting fit at Twist HQ – or rather Twist WFH (Working From Home).

We’ve been eating our fruit and vegetables.  These foods are fantastic for increasing your immune system.  They contain various antioxidants that help fight against free radicals which can instigate inflammation within the body.  Most fruit and veg contain a variety of macronutrients your body needs, for example, vitamin C which is required for development, repair and growth of all bodily tissues.  It also produces antibodies which counteract hostile microbes and helps stimulate many types of white blood cells which help in fighting off illness.  There’s an abundant of vitamins in tea, especially vitamin C, which is fantastic news for us at Twist Teas!

We’ve reduced our added sugar intake.  There is of course a significant link between added sugars and being overweight or obese.  Being obese may lead to a higher potential of getting ill.  Studies have shown this whereby people who are obese are twice as likely to get the flu, even if they have had a vaccine.  Reducing sugar intake can aid weight loss and reduce inflammation within the body.  Your daily sugar intake should be no more than 7.5% of your daily intake, therefore, for someone who has 2000 calories, they should only have 32.5 grams of sugar.  However some of us are finding it incredibly hard to keep to these levels during lockdown.  So we’ve been drinking copious amounts of tea from our Puds Without Sin range including Mint Humbug, Lemon Drizzle, Banana Shake and Minty Allsorts.  They don’t contain any sugar or artificial sweeteners and really deliver on flavour.

We’ve been exercising.  Now this doesn’t mean we’ve all been doing crazy intense sprinting or weight lifting.  Moderate exercise is a brilliant way to help boost your immune system.  Physical activity helps antibodies and white blood cells become more active, meaning they’re more ready to fight illness.  Exercise may also help your immune cells regenerate more regularly.  We’ve all been making the most of our limited time outdoors by doing moderate exercise like walking, jogging and cycling – whilst keeping a safe distance from anyone we meet.

Decrease stress.  Being able to manage your stress is a great way of reducing the chance of illness but it’s not easy especially at the moment.  Increased stress levels may cause imbalances in immune cell functions which inhibit the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens.  This is because the stress hormone corticosteroid suppresses the effectiveness of the immune system.  Stress will also see a growth in inflammation within the body.  Easy and fun ways to reduce stress is to do some exercise and stretching.  This releases endorphins which activate the opioid receptors within the brain making you feel a sense of euphoria and accomplishment.  It also helps minimise discomfort.  Stretching is particularly helpful because it increases the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system which enhances relaxation.  We’ve found it easier to complete a 20-minute stretch session whilst WFH.  But beware, if followed by a cup of Chamomile Yawn it can lead to a daytime nap as well!

The next time you need a ‘pick me up’, go for the tea bag, not the coffee. There’s more to tea than meets the eye, or should I say the taste buds!

All tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant which contains caffeine.  Other than being naturally low in calories and sugar free its other antioxidant properties, hydrating effects and detox abilities are all well documented.  But if you want to know the other specific benefits different types of tea can have on your health and fitness, put the kettle on and read this quickly before deciding which brew to chose!

Black Tea has many benefits, but perhaps a less known one which can improve health and fitness is that it contains an amino acid called L-theanine. L-theanine has been proven to help focus as it facilitates alpha activity within the brain. It is one of the main reasons as to why it is often reported that tea gives a more stable boost of energy in comparison to coffee. Our most popular black tea is Twentyfourseven which is an Indian Assam and Kenyan black tea, so if you are needing that tasty boost of lasting energy look no further!

Green Tea is one of the most popular teas due to its health benefits.   Like all tea it contains antioxidants and L-theanine which increase metabolic rate and fat burning as they mobilises free fatty acids (FFA’s) from tissues in the body allowing them to be burned as energy. The caffeine content helps physical performance by helping the flow of blood back to the heart allowing muscles to receive more oxygen and perform optimally.  Some of our most popular green teas include Refresher green which also contains some ginseng, Sencha green (Japanese) and our Beetroot Acai Matcha.

White Tea is rich in antioxidants as its full of polyphenols called catechins.  These help protect cells in the body from free radicals which can be harmful leading to increased potential of chronic inflammation and a deficient immune system.  Our favourite white teas at Twist are Strawberry & Rose and Passionfruit & Rose which are rich in flavour as they contain quality freeze-dried pieces of strawberry and passionfruit. They can be used as cold brews, brilliant for a delicious and healthy summer refreshment!

Herbal Tisanes are commonly called ‘teas’ although they don’t contain leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant.  They are made from a wide variety of fruit and herbs  with many having differ health benefits, so, I’ll give a brief insight into the benefits of a few of our most popular blends.  Our peppermint tea, Propermint contains menthol, which is a natural substance which assists muscle relaxation, and gives an almost cooling sensation.  Rooibos contains significantly high amounts of antioxidants, actually 50% more than Green Tea, and our delicious Pure Rooibos, Banana Shake, Lemon Drizzle and Mint Humbug blends all which contain rooibos taste delicious too.  Finally, our ginger tea, Ginger Snap contains around 60% pure ginger, which helps stimulate better digestion, cinnamon and liquorice which both have strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Twist fans will know that we’re not averse to adding a special ingredient or two to give our blends an extra functional ingredient.  Caffeine-rich yerba mate in Breakfast Boost has made it one of our best sellers since we started our journey in the tea-biz, for example.

But for Valentine’s Day, we wanted to find something really special to add that bit of magic and sparkle.  We had a yet-to-launch black tea with raspberry and chocolate waiting in the wings, so set our Master Tea Blender to work and after a few days of genius alchemy, we had a solution.


Damiana? What’s that, we hear you ask? It might be pretty much unknown here in the UK, but ask the indigenous cultures of Central and South America what it’s all about and they’d have a smirk on their face, a twinkle in the eye and, well, who knows what else happening below the belt. 

Because, for centuries, they’ve sworn by it as an aphrodisiac (as well as a general health tonic).   So, among the delicious ingredients of our Raspberry Choc Kiss is a touch of damiana.  What’s not to like about that?  And, new for 2020,  you can create a personalised caddy of this or any other blend,with the name of the love of your life and our special heart-shaped logo, with our new With Love From Me To Brew gift. 

Of course, like so many claims for natural remedies, there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence to support such claims, but little in the way of actual scientific evidence.  You know, from proper doctors with letters after their names and everything. So, we’re making no guarantees. However, what we do know that this blend is absolutely delicious and if it turns out to be the perfect cup of tea for Valentine’s Day, that’s even better! Hello. I’m Danny, and when I’m not working in the customer account team at Twist, helping to share the brand with suitable cafes, corporates and social media followers, I’m studying for a degree in nutrition.
This of course links well to our blends and the functional benefits of tea, and one aspect of the brand that really excites me is our ‘Blends With Benefits’. In fact I’ve talked to Claire, Nicky and Fraser so often about how great they are for you that they’ve asked me to use my expertise to write a blog.

In this blog – it’s my first so be gentle! – I’m going to share some thoughts on the importance of hydration.

Considering humans are 60% water, it seems obvious hydration is important, yet around 60-75% of people do not take in the required fluids (between two and three-and-a-half litres a day) to perform at their best. However, many people find water boring so can’t motivate themselves to drink it. Fortunately, Twist can contribute to that fluid goal. There’s absolutely no down side to our caffeine-free cold brews, herbals and rooibos blends, and while our black teas don’t hydrate quite as well as plain old water, if it helps you increase your liquid intake, that can only be a good thing.

So, what are the benefits of being properly hydrated?

Firstly, increased focus. As blood is 90% water, the more hydrated you are the easier the body will find it to transport it with oxygen-rich nutrients to the brain. This also adversely helps maintain blood pressure as without water the blood will become thicker, meaning it’s harder to transport. People often drink coffee to get a boost of energy and focus, yet, due to its high caffeine content it is a slight diuretic if drunk a lot. So, I tend to have a cup of our Choffee Mint tea instead, for a hit of coffee flavour with far less caffeine and more hydrating effects.

Secondly, reduction in joint pain. The role of a joint is to connect two or more bones together. Water helps lubricate the joints as the cartilage between is made up of around 80 percent water. Therefore, the more hydrated you are, the more flexible your joints are when moving. Arthritis is often the result of cartilage wearing away over a long period of time due to poor lubrication. This causes rubbing between the bones the joint, showing the importance of hydration. Although, if you’re like me and find drinking water really dull, to help I will often chuck in one of our cold brews – usually Strawberry & Rose, or as I prefer to call it, Strawberry and Danny Rose – to liven it up a bit.

Thirdly, weight loss. Water improves the effectiveness of the digestive system seeing fats being eliminated from the body more efficiently. It also boosts your metabolism and acts as an appetite suppressant. Maybe try switching out that fizzy drink, for a nice glass of water, or even better, a delicious herbal tea like Ginger Snap that has the flavour to match!

Finally, it helps exercise. During exercise we produce the energy needed through cellular respiration more specifically through Krebs Cycle. This is essentially the series of chemical reactions in the body to generate energy, and if you are dehydrated, Krebs cycle cannot work as efficiently, meaning you will have less energy to perform, leaving you tired and fatigued. This is why before I play football or go to the gym, I make sure I drink lots of water during the day so that I can perform at the top of my game! After workouts, water helps flush out toxins such as lactic acid which is often what gives you aches within your muscles, meaning hydration will help speed up your recovery time.

Although widely regarded as the most English of drinks, tea was actually something of a latecomer to these shores. While it’s been drunk in China since 3000BC (give or take a few years), it didn’t arrive here until the middle of the 17th century. About time too! The East India Company really began to capitalise on the growing demand for tea in the mid-18th century.

Until the early 20th century, tea leaves were brewed in a pot, retro-stylee.  That all changed in 1908, when the teabag was accidentally invented (qv. The microwave oven, post-it note and Teflon) by New York-based tea and coffee importer Thomas Sullivan. He would send his customers samples of tea packed in small silk pouches. The loose tea was intended to be removed from the bag, but many of his customers found it easier to brew the leaves within the porous silk bags. Ta da…The teabag!


For years, teabags were made of silk, then gauze, and remained in the format of an envelope or pouch.  However, in the 1940s, the rectangular, heat-sealed, paper teabag came on the scene, and was introduced to the UK in 1953. It thus became a genuinely convenient alternative to loose leaves, although the compromise was that much of the quality of the leaves themselves were lost as they were processed to the powdery stuff still found in most round or square teabags today.


Then came the tagged teabag; no need for a spoon to remove the bag from the water, so a bit of a step forward, but still no real advance on the quality of the tea leaves within the bags; great quality tea was still only available loose.

As customers demanded more from their tea, it became clear that a better solution was needed, and thus the mesh metal tea infuser ball was born. No need for a teapot, just load up the infuser ball with lovely whole leaves, leave them in your mug for a few minutes and there you have it; a lovely brew for one, with no teapot to empty out and wash up. The downside?  There’s now a mesh tea infuser ball to empty out and wash up.

So that wasn’t the solution, and the infuser ball soon faded out with the advent of the pyramid bag in the 1990s. This offered a much cleaner no-mess alternative to brewing whole leaf tea in a teabag. All the flavour, none of the fuss. There’s science behind it too;  the Advertising Standards Authority ruled that pyramid-shaped bags are more effective than the more traditional flat, round tea bags when making a cup of tea.

And now, in 2017, comes Twist Tea.  Top quality teas, in a convenient format – but offering so much more.  Of course, they are great as a hot drink. The summer of sports has well and truly begun – bringing with it a renewed interest in everything sports related. How do the best of the best do it? What helps them achieve the perfect physical fitness in training to be victorious? In a recent article in the Telegraph, it would appear the English football team has the answer: drinking tea!

The Telegraph’s Jamie Johnson says: “Eric Dier has revealed that a herb-infused drink called maté has become a staple part of the diet of England’s Tottenham contingent, under the influence of their Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino. “Eric and I spend our afternoons playing Uno and drinking tea – it’s a good way of spending an hour or two, just gossiping,” Danny Rose said. “That’s our secret.”

The tea in question is yerba maté, a traditional South American drink, made from the leaves and twigs of the IIex paraguariensis plant. Maté provides the energy boost without the jitteriness of coffee and has become very popular with top cyclists like Tim Wiggins.

With over 150 million cups of tea drunk in Britain daily, you might be surprised to learn there isn’t a simple one set time for tea. We’ve taken up a Herculean task of untangling the various moments when one can enjoy a cuppa into a loose-defined 8 times for tea in a  day.

Read on for a small insight into a tradition that is considered an inseparable part of British cultural heritage.  

Breakfast Tea

The tea to start your day with – English breakfast tea is often a blend of Assam, Ceylon and Kenyan black teas although the blends vary.

The practice of drinking tea for breakfast has – somewhat surprisingly – originated in America in the 1840s, as coined by tea merchant Mr Richard Davies who was the first to use the base of Congou (black Chinese Tea) with the addition of Pekoe (black Sri Lankan tea) and Pouchong (light Oolong variety) in his favourite time for tea.

The blend was then carried back to the UK by the Scottish merchants and popularised in England thanks to Queen Victoria who acquired the taste for it at her holiday home of Balmoral, Scotland.

In Ireland, the blend tends to be stronger, thanks to higher Assam content and is enjoyed with plenty of milk, often accompanied with an offering of breakfast treats.

Made popular recently by hobbits in Lord of the Rings and Hobbit franchises, elevenses refers to a time for tea and a light snack taken at eleven in the morning.

More than a snack itself, tea (such as Refresher Green) forms an essential part of this brief pause in the whirl of a day, providing a moment of calm and peace. The whole sencha green leaves in our green tea have none of the bitter aftertaste caused by smaller cut leaves and naturally extend the feeling of relaxation even after you’ve finished your cup.

Elevenses is, in fact, a time for tea so important, the concept has traveled well to other parts of Europe and further out into the world.  In Sweden, fika is a mid-morning break, taken with tea or coffee and a slice of cake or a pastry.

Afternoon Tea

Tea-drinking dates back to ancient China – the afternoon tea tradition is a rather recent invention by one Anna the seventh Dutchess of Bedford in the year 1840.

Meal times in the 1800s have not been spaced out to her liking and thus she has asked for a tray of cake, bread, butter, jam and tea to be brought to her room for her time for tea, in the late afternoon. Earl of Sandwich had a similar idea of putting a filling between two slices and naturally, the fashion of taking an afternoon tea took the society by a storm from then on.

Cream Tea

According to a legend, the origins of cream tea can be traced to Tavistock Abbey in Devon. After being plundered and badly damaged by Vikings in the 11th century, the monks have fed the labourers restoring it a rich diet of strong tea served with a side of bread with clotted cream and strawberry preserve during their time for tea.

The counties of Somerset, Cornwall and Sussex will all contest this origins story as they all claim the tradition started with them.

Modern-day cream tea is often considered an institution with standard rules: the cream is always clotted, the jam (or preserve) better be strawberry and the scones must be freshly made. The pot of tea is hot and plentiful and additional cakes may be offered, such as Victoria Sponge.

The great Cornwall – Devon debate is over the order in which you assemble your scones: cream then jam or the other way around?

Whichever you prefer, cream tea is a wonderful summer tradition, found all across the West Country. High tea

After the industrial revolution, afternoon tea signified a social event for upper classes, while traditional high tea was a necessary time for tea and a full meal at the end of a day – to some extent this version is still popular in Scotland and parts of Northern England.

Tea Break

The humble tea break is a firmly established time for tea in the British history, beginning in the 1780s during the height of the industrial expansion.

Such was the passion for tea breaks that in WWII, all British armoured vehicles have been equipped with a boiling vessel so that the team can enjoy a fresh cup of tea.

Nowadays, office planners have to consider including a breakout area, for that all important time for tea – a cuppa to collect your thoughts and socialise with your colleagues. Tea is one of the British cultural staples, as much as rain or red telephone boxes.

The origins of the tea-drinking tradition date back to the Han dynasty emperors in ancient China in the 2nd century BC.  China is also considered to have the earliest known records of the word for tea, te, dating back to the 8th century AD.

Once a luxury for the upper classes, modern day tea can be enjoyed with or without milk, in the palaces or in your kitchen.

The origins of 
chai hark back to ancient Persia and describe a drink flavoured by a sacred combination of bitter leaves, spices and honey.

It was in India where chai really took off as a drink of choice on hot and cold days. Traditionally a family pot would always be ready with an individual recipe, producing a warm soothing cup, serving as a natural digestif and improving one’s day from the first sip.

We have many delicious flavours but the one we keep coming back to is Sweet Chai of Mine.


There isn’t much in the world that can’t be improved with a nice cuppa. First recorded in 1925, it almost always is followed by ‘tea’ unless you’re in the US where ‘cawfee’ or ‘joe’ is not unheard of.

A cuppa gives just enough time to take a break and catch up on the recent happenings with a good friend.

For a tea as versatile as the word it describes, we reach for Choffee Mint – tea, coffee, hot chocolate and mint, all in one cuppa.

Rosy Lee

Spoken at one time all across the East-end of London, cockney rhyming slang was the language equivalent of a well-brewed cup of rosy lee – complex, full of character and completely unique.

Amongst the different words for tea, the origins of this example of cockney rhyming slang aren’t quite clear however, we can confidently say it doesn’t derive from the name of the burlesque dancer Gypsy Rosy Lee.  

The expression, known in print since 1925, pre-dates her working life.
‘Say it with flowers’ some say – or you can say it with a lovely cup of our Passionfruit & Rose blend.


Although Germanic in origin and dating back to the 500 BC, brewwana eventually made its way to England and over the centuries evolved into the word we all know and love.

A good brew up is for those occasions when the family comes over, together with a cake or at least a tin of biscuits. Whilst the leaves are steeping in hot water, all matters can be discussed and the world put to rights.

Unbelievably, the word for builders referring to tea was only first recorded in 1996! Although legend has it that it’s been in use conversationally for many years before that.

Taking inspiration from the materials they work with, builders tea is characteristically very strong, with a dash of milk to make it more akin to a redbrick, sweetened to preference (often not at all!).

The importance of a sturdy mug to hold it in cannot be underestimated, and our Twenty Four Seven is the perfect brew for the job. Hard hats are optional!
